The Story Behind the Bandanas
When kids became more involved in soccer, we spent a lot of time at the fields. Like many soccer families, we packed up chairs, snacks, and sometimes even our dogs and headed out for long days of games. While the kids wore their team uniforms on the field, I found myself wanting to be part of the team in my own way on the sidelines. I would coordinate outfits, make t-shirts, buy club gear, and even create flags for the games.
But one thing was missing — the dogs.
If they were coming with us to every game, they deserved to be part of the team too. That’s how the bandanas started. I began sewing bandanas using fabrics that matched our school colors, club colors, and soccer themes. Sometimes I added slogans like “Go Menomonie!” or personalized them with the dog’s name. What started as a small creative project quickly became something really fun.
Then one day our son was preparing for his junior prom. Like many families, we spent time making sure his tie matched his girlfriend’s dress. We ended up with a few extra ties and accessories — one even came with a matching handkerchief. When I saw that extra piece of fabric, I thought… this would make the cutest bandana for our puppy. And it did.
That moment sparked an idea.
I realized I could use fabric and creativity to include our dogs in family photos, special events, and celebrations. From there, the ideas kept coming. At the Peony Festival, our dog wore a peony-themed bandana and everyone stopped to admire her. At the Cheese Curd Festival, she proudly wore a bandana that said “Here for Cheese Curds” — and sure enough, people kept offering her treats.
It’s a simple and fun way to make your dog part of the moment.
